Sam Smith’s The Thrill of it All scored the British singer’s first No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, edging out new releases by Maroon 5 and Blake Shelton, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan on Monday, November 13.
The singer struggled with overdrinking, writer’s block and a relationship fallen apart, then he poured all that into his upcoming LP The Thrill of It All.
The album sold more than 237,000 units in its first week to debut as No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Billboard said it was Smith’s best sales week ever in the United States.
It made career highs in sales and in chart position for the singer.
Smith’s previous album In the Lonely Hour, from which Stay With Me won Song of the Year and Record of the Year Grammy Awards, peaked at number two and sold 166,000 copies in its debut week in July 2014.
Maroon 5’s new Red Pill Blues bowed at Number Two with 122,000 total copies.
The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).
